ROME (AFP) - Serie A tailenders Cagliari ended their farcical search for a coach on Saturday by appointing Davide Ballardini.
Ballardini takes over at the relegation-threatened Sardinian based club after a 10-day period which saw former coach Nedo Sonetti briefly resume his post following the refusal of his predecessor Marco Giampaolo to take the job.
"Cagliari would like to announce that Davide Ballardini is the new coach," said a statement on the club's website.
"He replaces Nedo Sonetti, whom the club would like to thank for the very professional manner in which he carried out his duties.
"Ballardini will be at the club's training ground on Sunday."
Sonetti - one of the most experienced coaches in Serie A having been in charge of Torino, Cremonese, Lecce and Brescia - originally resigned on December 15.
However, he agreed to return shortly afterwards when Giampaolo turned down the club's approaches citing it was a matter of pride and dignity that he did not take the post.
Sonetti, though, lasted just one match as he was let go after Cagliari slumped to a 5-1 humbling by Fiorentina last Sunday.
