PARIS, Jan 16 (Reuters) - A first-half goal by Japan's Daisuke Matsui gave Le Mans a 1-0 home win over Olympique Lyon on Wednesday and a place in the French League Cup semi-finals.
The midfielder struck from the edge of the box on 28 minutes to send the Ligue 1 leaders tumbling to defeat.
Lyon, chasing a seventh successive league title, looked sluggish at first but then woke up and were denied by a string of fine saves from Yohann Pele.
'We thought we would have an easy match and did not treat it seriously enough,' said Lyon coach Alain Perrin.
'The way we played tonight we would have struggled even against a Ligue 2 side,' he told his club's website. 'We must use this defeat as a lesson for the matches to come.'
Le Mans, seventh in Ligue 1, next meet Racing Lens who defeated Nancy 3-0.
Yohan Demont opened the scoring for Lens with an acrobatic volley on 15 minutes and forward Toifilou Maoulida doubled the advantage with an astute lob before halftime.
Demont's fellow midfielder Olivier Monterrubio wrapped it up with a second-half penalty.
Paris St Germain crushed Valenciennes 4-0 despite playing most of the tie with 10 men.
PSG took an early lead with a penalty by former Portugal striker Pauleta but had Colombia defender Mario Yepes sent off in the fifth minute for a tackle from behind on Slovakia forward Filip Sebo.
That did not stop the Parisians delighting their home fans after the break with two goals from Ivory Coast forward Amara Diane and a late effort by France midfielder Jerome Rothen.
PSG next face fellow Ligue 1 strugglers Auxerre, who knocked out Olympique Marseille 1-0 courtesy of a header in added time from midfielder Benoit Pedretti.
