It has been a hectic festive period for Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe.
A few days before Christmas he played his first professional match for RSC Anderlecht and even scored a goal.
In Twente Enschede, PSV Eindhoven, Feyenoord Rotterdam, AZ Alkmaar and Ajax Amsterdam quite a few well-known clubs were fighting it out for his services, but HSV was the destination of his choice in the end.
German football fans, journalists and stadium announcers will have to get used to the name Odjidja-Ofoe from now on.
"The new Vincent Kompany"
The son of a Ghanaian father and a Belgian mother, born in Gent, is rated as "the new Vincent Kompany" in Belgium. It comes in useful for HSV that they now have two "Kompanys" in their squad.
After all Kompany was one of the reasons why Odjidja-Ofoe ended up with HSV. He is friends with Kompany and his younger brother Francois for many years, but the main reason was the sporting prospect.
"HSV are a great club"
"HSV are a great club with fantastic individual players. It has always been my goal to play in such a strong team", the Belgian Under19 international says.
Still his departure to Hamburg came as a surprise to Odjidja-Ofoe. "I finally was part of the first team after two difficult years", he says. But it may well have been his one and only start for Anderlecht.
"I'm here to learn"
But he wants to experience more moments to savour with HSV - without putting himself under pressure.
"I'm here to learn. It will be difficult to break into this good team. But I'm patient and give myself 18 months to make the grade", Odjidja-Ofoe explains.
Until then he will surely have left the hectic festive period behind him.
