There were just three minutes gone between VfB and Ajax in the Dubai Cup third place play-off when former Dortmund keeper Dennis Gentenaar brought down Sami Khedira on his way through.
The Dutch side's keeper could consider himself very lucky not to have seen red for the foul but there was to be no repeat of leniency by the referee in the seventh minute when defender Hedwiges Maduro received his marching orders for a professional foul on Sergiu Radu. The Bundesliga side had the best chance to take the lead after twenty minutes through Ciprian Marica after a solo run by Yildiray Bastürk but the Romanian striker failed to make a clean connection with the ball and wasted his opening.
Debut for Ulreich
Despite being a man down, Ajax too produced some chances and tested VfB's debutant Sven Ulreich between the posts with the young keeper having to alert to save at the feet of Albert Luque. Armin Veh's men had the better of the play but did little going forward and failed to really threaten. The sides went into the half time break deadlocked and in the second period there was much of the same on offer as in the first 45 minutes, with Ajax playing deep and VfB struggling to open the Dutch defence. Ulreich was called into action just once as he advanced quickly from his penalty area to foil a Dutch attack whilst Alexander Farnerud and Roberto Hilbert both tried their luck from distance at the other end.
Farnerud makes the difference
With the game heading towards a penalty shoot-out, Swedish international Alexander Farnerud spared his side the spot kicks thanks to a mistake in the Ajax defence. With two minutes to go, the midfielder smashed a shot into the bottom right corner to make it 1-0 and secured third place in the Dubai-Cup challenge for Armin Veh's men.
The line-ups:
VfB Stuttgart: Ulreich - Hilbert, Tasci, Meira (C), Osorio - Khedira (60. Träsch), Pardo, Bastürk (60. Farnerud), Hitzlsperger (60. da Silva) - Marica (60. Ewerthon), Radu (67. Fischer)
Ajax Amsterdam: Gentenaar - Maduro, Colin, Emanuelson - Kennedy (60. Suarez), de Jong, Leonardo (59. Perez), van der Heijden, Davids (C) (46. Donald (83. Ogararu)) - Urzaiz (60. Huntelaar), Luque (60. Rommedahl)
