Werder Bremen's Brazilian duo of Diego and Naldo will not be at the start of the squad's winter training camp, the club has announced.
Naldo will miss out on Thursday's first training sessions because of a delayed flight from Brazil. However, playmaker Diego will have to wait until mid-January before he can take to the pitch with the rest of the team.
Diego will miss out on Turkey
"Diego is currently participating in a special training programme with the physiotherapists of the Brazilian national team in Sao Paulo" explained Bremen Head Coach Thomas Schaaf. "It should help him to avoid the groin problems he encountered during the first half of the season." Schaaf shoud be able to count on every other player in the squad in Belek, Turkey. Schaaf also pointed out that "it was the wish of the player to undergo this therapy, and we agreed to it. After all, Diego has played constantly for nearly a year and had to handle a lot." Schaaf sees no problems in that at all. "Diego has proven that he can integrate into our game very quickly. The match against Dortmund is in no danger."
Frings: "Want to be champion"
That match is also a "must play" game for German international Torsten Frings. The midfielder has already undergone lactate tests with the Bremen squad. "If there's a chance that I can particpate in the training camp, I'll be there" he explained. Frings is currently undergoing an individual training programme "I want to rejoin team training by the middle of January" he explained, adding that his competitive streak has not been subdued by his injuries. "If we are on the same points as the league leaders, we must say that becoming champions is our objective."
