Rennes 3-1 Marseille

RENNES, January 13 (Ligue 1) - Marseille defender Juan Angel Krupoviesa endured a nightmare Ligue 1 debut as two late Sylvain Wiltord goals gave Rennes the win.

Djibril Cisse had put OM ahead after 16 minutes before Mickael Pagis restored parity for Rennes six minutes before half-time.

However, Krupoviesa was shown a straight red card with 22 minutes remaining and Wiltord struck twice in the last nine minutes to compound the Argentinian's misery.

Marseille went into the game hoping to extend their unbeaten run to 10 games and they deservedly took the lead when Kanga Akale's cross found Cisse at the far post and he headed past Simon Pouplin.

The home side nearly produced an immediate response when Wiltord released Jimmy Briand down the left and his shot fizzed just past the post.

Moments later Briand had another fine chance when he connected with Pagis' cross, but his header was superbly kept out by Steve Mandanda.

With half-time looming, Rennes scored a deserved equaliser when Pagis broke the offside trap and coolly dinked the ball over the onrushing Mandanda.

Both sides started the second half in tentative fashion and with 62 minutes gone Krupoviesa's shot from the left was blocked by Rennes keeper Simon Pouplin.

That was to prove Krupoviesa's last positive contribution to the game as the on-loan Boca Juniors defender was dismissed six minutes later for a reckless challenge from behind on Pagis.

It didn't take long for Rennes to make the numerical advantage count and with nine minutes to go Olivier Thomert's cross was headed goalwards by Pagis and Mandanda pushed the ball out to Wiltord who headed in from close range.

With one minute remaining Briand's shot was parried by Mandanda and Wiltord was on hand once again to seal the win with a tap-in.
